Looking for a fun way to decorate your walls? Why not invest in some great photography?
Luxury. Glamour. Over-the-top. Slim Aarons loved to photograph "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places". And photograph he did:
How can you blame him? He obviously spent the better part of his life in outrageously beautiful places and made money documenting it. Not a bad gig.
I am working on a job in Beverly Hills, and my client wants to add some pizazz to her dining room, without changing the major pieces. My first thought was that we should go Old Hollywood Glamour, and I knew just the photograph to start the process:
Lucky for me, Jonathan Adler is also a huge fan, and this photo is included in the curated collection of Aarons' photography for sale on his website. They are prints made from the original film, so they are actually affordable for people like you and me. I love how they are mounted on aluminum and faced with high-quality plexiglass. It's a very cool, frameless look.
They're just so eccentric and over-the-top, they make me laugh....
...particularly this series of couples posing in front of their extravagant homes and cars. I mean, how fun would a grouping of these be?
The snowy images would be super cool in a mountain cabin that doesn't take itself too seriously:
And then there's the 60's-style nudies:
Maybe for a man-cave?
These "bunnies" are so kitschy, I love it...
His work represents the excess of the time, which doesn't hold a candle to the excess of our the modern era. I guess that's why I like it.
Besides being bright and poppy, they have a retro feeling that is undeniably fun. One can't take herself too seriously if there's a Slim Aarons hanging on the wall. And that's a good thing.
