Black Bedrooms

My chosen aesthetic is generally light and bright, so when I kept finding myself pinning pictures of black bedrooms, I surprised even myself.  But there is just something so chic and luxurious about a well-lit bedroom with dark, dark walls.

Now for me, the term well-lit is very important.  I'm not interested in sleeping in a dark dungeon. But with the large windows, white ceiling and light carpet/furnishings, I totally dig that bedroom.

I would say the first time I fell in love with the concept was when Domino Mag covered Jenna Lyons (JCrew's creative genius) and her brownstone a few years back. I could not stop staring at the photos, tore them out (this was before Pinterest, people), and continue to stare at them  to this day.

I mean, it just doesn't get much cooler than this!  The top one is more of a deep navy, which is still amaaaazing, and the bottom one includes that divine bathtub that I want to soak away in with a glass of champagne.  Right now.

How about this beauty? So cool. The use of the natural woven blind is a great complement to the matte black. And then there's the fact that they used my favorite Dwell Studio Chinoiserie Duvet. Kinda making me want to paint my walls right now.

Jordan Ferney, of Oh Happy Day, took the plunge, and I love how it turned out:

The swing is just killer.  Love the layered rugs. Notice how she even painted the trim black, which is a cool choice that has major impact. It works because she kept the coved ceiling and the bedding white.  Great contrast happening. Here's another angle:

I love how masculine it is. I imagine some fab clothing designer in silk pajamas sleeps there.  The leather chair is fantastic, as are the sconces and the muted photographs hung gallery-style above the bed. Not too shabby.

The black wall in this one serves as the perfect backdrop for that fab vintage trunk and typewriter.  These people obviously don't have children.   If that was our room, Joel and I would wake up each morning to the sound of our little girl pounding away on that typewriter so that it would 'ding' at the end of each line. We have to protect ourselves from such things.  Self-preservation over style.

This one has a similar feel with the use of a dark gray/blue.  That's just about my favorite color at the moment.  I also love that round, white tulip table as a nightstand and the beautiful suzani on the bed.  Super chic.

It's a daring move, but one that I doubt you'll regret if you have a room with some great natural light.  I'd love to see pictures of your dark-hued bedrooms, so please send them on.  I'll feature them in a Readers Reside post soon.
